Progress Report: Fall 2008

Sarith and Roger visited three schools and met with all our students and teachers this summer. Here you see Sarith’s niece passing out uniforms at Srei Pou school. Attendance here and at the other school built at Srei Pou shortly after ours is down. We asked the principal at Poum Steung to try to find out why. Attendance at the other three schools remains excellent. The Kouy students met us at Srei Pou so we did not have to ride that blue farm cart in the background across country. We gave out paper and art materials. Every teacher and every student at all four schools got new clothes. |

Here are some students getting their uniforms. Once they put them on after waiting quietly for so long, they are like a flock of butterflies only much, much noisier.

We now have organic gardens and irrigation tanks at Poum Steung and Tampoeung. The rice and dried fish ration is restarted, so we will have fresh vegetables to add to breakfast. To help them later find work, we started English classes for all students at these two schools. To the right you see the student response to, “Who wants to learn English?” |

Here you see Tampoeng Village welcoming Sarith to the opening celebration. His father founded this village, and our school is built on land donated by him and his sister. Our new organic garden and irrigation tank is built on the very spot where their family home was burned to the ground by the Khmer Rouge. Aukuhn sharan - thank you very much for helping us in this small way begin to reverse these wrongs and help this village and its children. |
