Progress Report: Summer 2008

mother and child

We are pleased to report progress on all four schools. Construction at the newest, in Tampoung Village, is nearing completion. The roof is the last major structure to be added. On the right is one of our future students with his mom. While he’s not happy to have his picture taken, Mom is pleased that he will be able to attend school. We also can report progress on the two wells we undertook to dig, one here in Tampoung and one in the Kouy village. Drilling here went very well, the water has tested as potable and we are setting up a storage tank. The Kouy drilling was more difficult in that rocky area, and some equipment was broken, but the drilling was ultimately successful. The water there will be tested soon.

The Kouy school is going well and here is one of the girls there. New families continue moving here. As the Kouy reconstitute their culture, they now have water as well as a school. There is some bad news - the government has stopped paying teachers trained in the short course. This includes many teachers around the country and most of our Kouy teachers. Officials have promised to pay them next year. In the meantime, we are providing the teachers with small salaries and the village is housing and feeding them.

The new school at Srei Pou is full of students. The building inspired building a second school in this village, where the only school was an open shed two years ago. We support other schools as well. You may remember that two years ago we funded a well for the school at the Amputees Village. Here is Sarith demonstrating that it works very well. This is where we saw the python, as you may also remember from the progress report. No snake this year, alas.

At Poum Steung, the program to provide breakfast has stopped due to increased food prices, although the government promises to add funding soon so it can resume. We are expanding the fishpond there, and will teach students to grow vegetables near the pond where they can be irrigated. This project has been slowed because rainy season came so early this year. Once planted, the vegetables will grow fast. Here is Patrick, standing by some trees the students planted, looking at the trees Sarith planted in 2003 to give shade. The schoolyard is now much cooler. Again, aukuhn shahran for helping the children in these poor farm villages.
