Progress Report: Spring 2007

school
We have good news, as well as a sad loss, to report this Spring. Good news first: The school at Srei Pou is now done, as you can see on the left. Desks are installed, and classes are being held!
Sarith’s nephew Chey took a French volunteer who is helping at Poum Steung School along with him to the opening ceremony at Srei Pou. Msr. Patrick Guillou, as the only foreigner present, found himself representing the Resurrection Church donors and us at the ceremony, much to his surprise. He and our friend Toshiro Yamaguchi, who also helped at Poum Steung, took these pictures.

More good news is the success at Kouy School - it too is now complete, including doors, blackboards and desks. It was more difficult than we had anticipated (impossible, actually) to get qualified teachers. The Kouy found three people with enough education to teach. We provided funds for tuition and living expenses so they could take the qualifying course. We will pay their salaries the rest of this year, and the government will then pay them next year. Toshiro said the children are so eager to start school that they come here to play every day.

The sad news is that Sarith’s brother (and Chey’s father) Pran, who helped so much with Poum Steung, has passed away. We received a donation for a much-needed school in Pran’s village, which we will use to begin building this school in his memory.

The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers funded three new wells. These will serve the schools and villages at Srei Pou, Kouy and Pran’s school. Since food is sometimes in short supply, we decided to try to teach fish farming. We plan to dig and supply several small fish ponds for the sewing girls. We will, as usual, give out many school uniforms. So, life goes on, as does our project. We join with these Poum Steung girls in saying, ”Thank you all very much.”
