Progress Report: Spring 2010

We visited our schools in early March and have a great deal to report. English classes are going well. We delivered English tapes to teachers, and the students received notebooks and pens. The two gardens are producing fresh vegetables, which are now being added to school breakfasts. Here you see a teacher at Pouem Steung with a nice big squash, and a view of the garden there with some of our gardeners.

Here are Srei Pou students and the outdoor kitchen built by their parents. We helped Tampoeung with seed money and “Room to Read” donated a library with books. We gave materials to volunteers at Poum Steung who were building a bridge at the school, saving a 3km walk in rainy season.

Our biggest project was at Kouy school. Here is the vice mayor surveying the two-classroom addition. Over 400 Kouy families have now moved to the village. We added a school bathroom and dug a pond for storing water in the dry season. We gave out notebooks and pens. The school is 5 km from the hard road and 7 km from the high school. Kouy students without bikes will not go to high school because it is too far.

To solve this transportation problem at our other schools, we bought 10 used bikes. We gave 8 to the poorest students and used 2 to pump water for a school garden (left). Many large families who live far from school and town have no transportation at all. Volunteers have begun raising funds for bikes to give to students in these families. Soon we will be able to give bicycles to poor Kouy students as well.

We are trying two computers from One Laptop Per Child. We will keep them running and find a computer teacher. To the left you see Marina, a volunteer from OLPC, who came from Vietnam to help. The students were fascinated.

Our students and their parents thank you for your generosity.
