Progress Report: Fall 2009

instructor in front of students

These last several months have shown steady progress at all four of our schools.

This year we hired a new educator to instruct our teachers in speaking English. The teachers pass along their knowledge during the week, and go in for more training on weekends. This way they stay one step ahead of the students. Motivation is high and results have exceeded our expectations! Sarith tested the students by asking each to say, define, and spell a word in English. Every child did so, without error or repetition. Success! Here you see Sophat, our excellent English coach, training teachers from our several schools.

Each of our thousand students again got a new uniform this school year. We bought ten bicycles to distribute. Eight went to the poorest graduates so they could get to the high school. Two bicycles were made into a pump to fill the water tank at Tampoeung.

Here you can see an improvement made some years ago which is now "bearing fruit": the trees Sarith planted at Poum Steung. The shade they provide, along with the well and outdoor kitchen, make the school a welcoming place to come to learn.

To the left is our newest schoolyard, at Tampoeung. As you can see there is no shade around the school. Average high temperatures in this region are 85+ degrees all year round. We will get trees planted here this year, and five years from now this will look like the picture above.

Many thanks to the Middleton High School students who raised $3,000 for an addition to the Kouy school which we hope to begin in 2010. Also, we are grateful to IBM for again donating $1,000 for books, supplies, and bicycles.

Your continuing support is deeply appreciated. We send you the thanks of the graduating students and of their proud parents. All of us say Aukuhn Sharan for this great gift of hope you have given.
