Progress Report: Spring 2009

Tampoeung, our newest school, has undergone the planned improvements. The new bathroom is proudly shown on the right. Deep holes and irregularities in the schoolyard have been filled, as you can see below, and we have expanded the gardens. This year we will plant trees in the schoolyard, similar to the ones Sarith planted five years ago at Poum Steung, which now nicely shade the playground. The children pictured here are wearing the uniforms that we distributed last year. We have 235 students attending at Tampoeung, half in the morning and half in the afternoon. We hope to be able to fence the schoolyard there to protect the gardens (behind the students) from the odd water buffalo and cow. Schoolyards at Srei Pou and the Kouy school are also scheduled to be improved this year.

The English classes we started this school year are going quite well. The teachers take English lessons on weekends and then teach the students after school, so we pay them a bit extra. In the past we have had many offers from people who wished to assist in our schools, but have not had a way to use them. Since hearing and conversing in English is so useful to learners, volunteers can now provide real help.

With this in mind, we are considering ways to accommodate volunteers. One possibility is for us to provide space near the schools where they could get meals and have safe and clean lodging. We have discussed requesting funding for this with a local service club, and they were receptive. Details and a budget await Sarith’s visit this summer.

We have saved the very best news for last. This year, we have our first 6th grade graduates at Poum Steung. We are considering ways to help good students from the poorest families go on to high school. We are very proud of our new graduates. Again we say, “Aukhun Sharan.” Thank you very much for making all this possible!
