Emergency Flood Relief
The Cambodian School Project is a 501 c 3 non-profit corporation. We help rural children in Cambodia get an education so as to escape poverty. Right now we have an urgent need for assistance for 245 families flooded out at one of our school villages. For the first time since we built the school in 2002, these families are out of their homes and their new rice crops are ruined. We are asking assistance to purchase bulk rice and seed to support these very poor families. |
The flooded school at River Village has been quite successful. In our first class, all but two children who started 1st grade with us graduated from 6th. These two had moved away. We provide more than just schools: we dig wells and organic gardens, serve a vegetable and rice breakfast to supplement inadequate diets, provide school uniforms and supplies and teach English after school to enhance employability. We trained poor girls from this village to sew and they make the 1,500 school uniforms we give out to our students each year.

River Village is completely under water. People and animals are camped out on the road, the highest ground. They are using boats to cut grass (now under water) to keep their animals alive. Some of the rice crop may be able to be replanted but family rice supplies are gone and people have used what cash they have to buy rice on the market. With everything flooded there are no day jobs and no way to gather food. Everyone is sharing but supplies are running out.

Here is the school, built on fill and much higher than the village. Never before flooded, now it has boats tied to it. We are asking for funds to buy rice to tide people over until the water goes down, and to later buy seed for those who can re-plant. A 50 kg bag of rice costs $26. This will feed a family of 5 for a month. All contributions are tax-free. Board members pay all fund raising expenses, so 100% of your contribution will go to Cambodia to buy rice and seed.
